Why Is It Important To Identify Unknown Callers

No one enjoys getting unwanted calls from unknown callers, but it happens to many people every day. With the prevalence of robocalls and scam calls these days, all it takes is giving your number to the wrong person once to open the flood gates. Some of these phone calls may simply be telemarketers. Other times, you may get repeated calls from debt collectors, or someone may be trying to harass or threaten you. Sometimes, the reason for these calls may even be more sinister than that.

You may or may not be able to see an unknown number on your caller ID when you receive these calls. Whether you’re getting spam callers or other annoying calls on your landline or on a cellphone, it’s good to know how to find the source of the calls. Here are some tips for tracking down unknown callers and why it’s important to do so.

It could be someone you know.

This is probably the least likely reason you would be getting calls from an unfamiliar phone number, but it’s worth exploring the possibility. These days, people get new phones and new numbers all the time, so it could be that an old friend or acquaintance is trying to reach you. It’s easy to assume that they’d leave a voicemail, but they may be uncertain that they have the right number.

If you’re on a landline in the United States, you can use the code *69 to return a call. While smartphones tend to have caller ID built-in, they may not be able to identify a private number. You can also contact your phone company to sign up for services like TrapCall, which can block harassing callers and even record calls.

The calls may be illegal.

If your phone rings multiple times per day, and it’s always the same number, there’s a good chance that these are illegal calls. They may be robocalls or spam calls from telemarketers, or you may have fallen victim to a harasser. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) was put into place to restrict the usage of automatic dialers and prerecorded voice messages for telemarketing purposes. The Do-Not-Call registry (DNC) was also enacted to give consumers the chance to opt out of these calls.

If you’re receiving robocalls that you believe are illegal, the best thing to do is to report them to the FTC. You could also file a civil lawsuit with the TCPA, but it’s smart to seek legal advice before taking such drastic action.

Callers may be trying to sabotage you.

Speaking of legal matters, if you’re involved in a legal case or a divorce where you’ve retained the services of a Louisiana child custody attorney, receiving unknown calls may be a sign that someone is trying to make your case more difficult. This may sound paranoid, but it’s actually not uncommon. You should never divulge information over the phone regarding your child custody situation or any other legal cases you may be involved in. You may be supplying information that can be used against you without realizing it, and anything you say can make the job more difficult for your attorney.

Reaching a child custody agreement is often the most difficult part of the divorce process, and you naturally want to maintain your relationship with your child as well as possible. An attorney with years of experience in family law can help you and your former spouse come to an agreement that serves the best interests of the child, and you certainly don’t want to make that more difficult by answering the wrong phone call. If anyone does try to contact you about your case, simply refer all questions to your attorney, and notify them immediately.
