How to Become a Pharmacist in Australia for International Students

Australia- A land of opportunities, diversity, and a world-class healthcare system where innovation meets community care. According to a survey in Australia, pharmacists consistently ranked among the most trusted professionals. Australia provides a clearer and rewarding pathway for pharmacists trained overseas to achieve professional registration. Australia attracts pharmacists internationally due to the shortage of pharmacists, especially in the rural areas, the work-life balance, attractive salaries, expanded scope of practice, and pathway to permanent residency.
Having said that, what is the process for becoming a pharmacist in Australia?
In this blog, we will discuss all the required details to become a registered pharmacist in Australia, ensuring you have the most current information to navigate the process successfully.
Step 1: Verify Eligibility and Educational Requirements
Who can practice as a pharmacist in Australia, and what are the educational requirements?
Before proceeding on this journey, the first step is to check if you are eligible. You must have:
- A Recognized Pharmacy Degree: A minimum of a four-year full-time pharmacy degree from an institution recognized by the APC.
- Registration in Your Home Country: You must be a registered pharmacist in any country other than Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, the UK, or the US, or you must have completed four years of continuous pharmacy academic study in one of the countries mentioned above.
- If yes, you will be eligible for the Australian Pharmacy Council or APC Knowledge stream.
Step 2: Undergo the APC Skills Assessment
Once the candidate is eligible for the Knowledge Stream pathway, they will enter the document evaluation process or Skills assessment process, which involves two important parts:
- Eligibility Check:
In this process, the candidate should provide all the documents that the APC requires to prove their eligibility. Once this is done, you become eligible for the next step, which is the OPRA exam.
Fees: AUD810
- Overseas Pharmacist Readiness Assessment (OPRA) Exam:
This is the licensure exam for international pharmacists to practise in Australia. It tests the candidate’s skills and competencies to match Australian Healthcare standards. This exam was previously known as KAPS, or Knowledge Assessment of Pharmaceutical Sciences. As of March 2025, the OPRA exam has replaced the KAPS exam. It assesses your pharmaceutical knowledge and readiness to practice in Australia.
OPRA exam fee: AUD2,190
Step 3: Understand the Skilled Migration Visa Options
Pharmacists fall under the Skilled Occupations list and can apply for various skilled migration visas, including Subclass 189 or Skilled Independent Visa, Subclass 190 or Skilled Nominated Visa, Subclass 491 or Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa.
Step 4: Meet English Language Proficiency Requirements
This step is a mandate for your visa requirements. The candidate must demonstrate proof of English proficiency through one of the following tests, which will be valid for two years:
- IELTS Academic: Minimum overall score of 7.0, with no band less than 7.0.
- OET: Minimum score of B in each of the four components.
- PTE Academic: Minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills.
- TOEFL iBT: Minimum scores of 94 overall, with specific minimum scores in each section.
Step 5: Apply for an Internship
The next step is applying for a provisional registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia. After passing the OPRA® exam and meeting English language requirements, you can apply for provisional registration after you migrate to Australia or while in your home country, according to your needs. After migrating to Australia, find an internship and complete the internship hours 1575 under a supervised preceptor.
Step 6: Complete the Intern Training Program and Examinations
During your internship, you must:
- Complete the required supervised practice hours.
- Once a candidate completes 75% of the total intern hours, they will be eligible to take the Intern Written Exam (APC) and the Oral Exam (OSCE) conducted by AHPRA.
Step 7: Apply for General Registration
Passing the Australian pharmacist intern written and oral exams will make you eligible for the final registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia, allowing you to practice independently without supervision.
Why Choose Australia for Your Pharmacy Career?
Before concluding that Australia is the best choice among the available ones, let’s enquire into the reasons that make its way to the first five choices that pharmacists choose for their career:
