Cleaning a Shearling Jacket

Shearling jackets are the latest’s year’s big trend.  There are many reasons to own one. In case you do, there are some cleaning details you must know in order to have your shearling jacket for many years.

The sheepskin obtained from a young lamb is known as shearling. The wool is shorn to a regular length, but it is left on the hide, which is then tanned. Shearling jackets are extremely warm and robust since the tanned side is worn on the outside and the wool on the inside. Your shearling jacket may be cleaned at any professional dry cleaning facility, and dirt or stains may be removed. If your jacket is lightly dirty, though, you may want to save money by doing it yourself rather than paying for dry cleaning. Here’s a quick approach to keeping your jacket in good condition so it lasts a lifetime:

Proper preparation before storage

Make sure your shearling jacket is clean before storing it in the spring. You should never store it with stains on it. As a general guideline, give it at least a couple of cleanings per year to avoid dirt buildup. You’ll have no choice but to take it to the cleaners if you let it get really soiled.

Use proper tools

Scrub off unclean areas or scuff marks using a suede stone or cleaning brush. Don’t forget about the jacket’s interior. A dry rag should also be used to brush the wool inside. A clean, damp rag should be used to remove any difficult stains from the wool lining. Use a little wool cleaner in the water if rubbing with water isn’t enough. Harder-to-remove stains should be removed as a result.

Avoid plastic bags to store your shearling jacket. Instead, keep it in a cardboard box or a cotton garment bag. Use a strong hanger and hang it loosely and naturally.

What happened if it gets wet?

Allow your shearling jacket to dry naturally. If the wool lining is excessively damp, turn it inside out. Never, ever, ever put a shearling jacket in the washing machine and never put it in the dyer. It will, without a doubt, wreck it. If you want your jacket to dry faster, don’t put it near a fire or heater because the heat will damage the leather.

Shearling jackets are great investments. They not only keep us warm, but they also allow us to do so in style. As a result, they come at a steep price tag. However, if you take excellent care of your jacket, it will serve you well for the rest of your life.
