Five things you need to rent a car in Canada

If you want to rent a car in Canada, the following is a list of the five things you need.

Car Hire Canada is a fantastic way to experience everything from traveling around a new city to seeing the stunning landscapes of the country. When renting a car for the first time or coming to Canada from another country, the requirements can often be a little bit confusing. Before you leave, gather the following items:

1. A valid driver’s license

The license must be in good standing at the time of rental and throughout the duration of the rental. A valid driver’s license contains the following:

A state, territory, or possession in the United States that is a signatory to the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic from 1949 or the Geneva Convention on the Regulation of Inter-American Automobile Traffic from 1943.

A nation that has a treaty of reciprocity with Canada

In addition,

A declaration attesting that the renter, authorized driver, or additional driver has a valid license that is not currently suspended, revoked, expired, canceled, or surrendered may be required at the time of rental.

Only if it is unrestricted and valid for the duration of the rental is a temporary driver’s license acceptable.

You won’t be able to rent a car if you only have a learner’s permit (a G1 or G2 license).

2. To be above a certain age

To rent a car within Canada, you must be over a certain age for all rental companies in Canada.

Except in Saskatchewan, where the minimum age is 18, the most common minimum age is 21 or 24.

Luxury cars, SUVs, and minivans are typically not available for rent to drivers under the age of 25.

You should inquire about the rental car company’s specific policy with them.

3. A clean driving record

This will be enforced differently by the car rental company you choose.

Calling the rental company in advance is your best bet if you are concerned about your driving record.

4. A credit card

Present a credit card with sufficient funds to cover the entire trip and that is accepted by the rental car company.

The full payment can also be made in cash.

5. Insurance

Rates for liability coverage and insurance for the rental car vary not only by company but also by region.

If you need to rent a big truck or van, your car insurance probably won’t cover it.

Additionally, in the event of an accident, some businesses charge additional fees.

Whether you use your own vehicle insurance, a credit card, or the additional insurance provided by the rental company, you are ultimately responsible for the car you rent. After reading the rental car company’s insurance policy, call your insurance and credit card companies to see if you are covered. A quick 10-minute phone call can save you a lot of stress on the day of your rental.
