How To Reduce Melanin: The Perfect Skincare Routine To Reduce Melanin And Dark Spots

What is Melanin?

Melanin is the pigment that determines the color of your skin. Melanin is the pigment that gives your skin, hair, and eyes their color. Melanin is produced when skin cells are exposed to the sun. You produce more melanin the more time you spend in the sun.

There are two kinds of melanin- eumelanin –  which gives skin a brown color (tan), and pheomelanin – which gives skin a red color (burn). Sun exposure on a regular basis results in a tan. It increases eumelanin levels in the skin, giving it a brownish tan and protecting it from the sun’s rays. Excessive sun exposure elevates the level of pheomelanin, which causes the skin to burn, weakens the natural skin barrier, and increases the risk of cancer.

What Causes Dark Spots And Hyperpigmentation?

Overproduction of melanin in certain patches or areas of the skin can result in hyperpigmentation and dark spots leading to an uneven skin tone and uneven skin texture. Here’s where finding how to reduce melanin becomes our priority but it’s important to do it safely and in a manner that it doesn’t damage our skin in any way.

The Perfect Daytime Skincare Routine For Reducing Melanin?

It’s highly fashionable to follow a 10-step routine. That’s fantastic if it’s working for you. However, doing too much isn’t always the greatest thing for your skin. When you’re initially starting out and have no notion what works best for you, less is more. If finding out how to reduce melanin is your priority then, a good and sustainable skincare routine should be non-negotiable.

Starting your day with a fresh face with all its needs fulfilled is very important. The day is also the time when your skin is exposed to all sorts of irritants from pollutants to the infamous UV rays! So, it’s important to have a good skincare routine. Here, at Deconstruct, we have tried our best to give a perfect skincare routine for tackling dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

Remember: Perfection is subjective and your skin is unique so always do a patch test before using any skincare products.

  • Start with an exfoliating cleanser: We recommend a cleanser that supports cell turnover so your cells get energized right at the beginning of the day. But don’t use exfoliating cleansers more than 2 or 3 days a week and for the rest of the days, use a gentle cleanser. We advise you to go for an exfoliator with AHA or BHA like Salicylic acid, glycolic acid, etc. For a gentle cleanser, you can pick up any of your favorite hydrating face washes.
  • Use an antioxidant serum: Using Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Niacinamide, Kojic Acid, Azelaic acid or Ferulic acid can really help with reducing the excessive melanin. These chemicals not just brighten and lighten your skin but also have protective functions!
  • Use a high-quality moisturizer: Some people tend to skip moisturizers thinking their oily skin will compensate for it but instead it makes your skin produce more oil, leading to clogging of pores and acne outbreaks. So never skin moisturizers! If you have oily skin, use a water-based or gel-based moisturizer instead of cream-based which is advised for dry skin types but never skip moisturizers!
  • APPLY YOUR SUNSCREEN! Ever heard of the old wise saying- “Prevention is better than cure?” Well, it’s true. Melanin is activated by sun rays, and Uv rays are known for their skin-damaging effects so always layer your face with at least 2 fingers full of good sunscreen with over SPF 30. We also recommend choosing a mineral-based sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium. Also, reapply your sunscreen every 2-3 hours.

The Perfect Nighttime Skincare Routine For Reducing Melanin?

At night, it’s just not you who rests, it’s also your body and your skin! Just like your body repairs and rejuvenates, your skin too gets repaired and reunites. Additionally, at night your skin is undisturbed and not exposed to the damaging pollutant and sunlight, and therefore, it’s the perfect time to provide skin with the little tricky chemicals. The ones that could actually do the magic and make your skin smooth, reducing melanin and curing all that hyperpigmentation and dark spots that seem so stubborn! Here’s our take on your perfect nighttime skincare routine! But like always, do the patch test first!

  • Cleanse with a gentle cleanser: Using your favorite gentle face wash at night not just makes your skin feel fresh after a long tiring day but can also remove your day makeup. Never wear makeup to bed and it clogs your pores and leads to acne outbreaks. You can even use a good micellar water cleanser for this step.
  • It’s time for retinoids: We know that retinoids and retinol could be scary but they are also the best when it comes to reducing dark spots and hyperpigmentation. They can cause cell turnover and basically give you new skin. Always use retinol in less than 1% concentration and in pea-sized amounts. Also, try only using it over the affected areas. You can also use Alpha Arbutin instead of Retinol. Wait for at least half an hour before going to Step 3.
  • Moisturize your skin: Again, hydration is the key! We advise using moisturizers with NMF complex, hyaluronic acid, Niacinamide, propylene glycol, or ceramides. Choose what works best for your skin!
  • Good night’s sleep: Sleeping peacefully for at least 6 to 8 hours is important for your overall health and skin’s health, so go to the bed ladies!

Conclusion

If you haven’t noticed, Indian skin is more prone to dark patches and hyperpigmentation than Western skin. Sun damage, acne scarring, aging, hormone imbalance, and heredity are all common causes, and while it isn’t very hazardous, it may be aggravating to cope with. Getting rid of dark spots, discoloration, and hyperpigmentation can be a difficult undertaking unless you choose in-office procedures like microdermabrasion. A simple change in your skincare routine can help you to reduce melanin and should also help you address the problem’s fundamental cause.
