lacksad: Under the Skin – a preview of the noir black cat film

John Blacksad is a detective. He’s good at his job, not least because he learned how to survive as a child in bad circumstances and while serving as a soldier during World War II. The fact that he’s also a black cat isn’t particularly noticeable, because all the characters in Blacksad’s world are anthropomorphic figures – animals that appear to be human. The adventure Blacksad: Under the Skin takes you to 1950s New York City and gives you the role of a detective who discovers something much bigger while searching for a missing person…

We also recommend that you get in and try something new for yourself!

It’s a fascinating story! And new possibilities

Joe Dunn’s boxing ring is going through hard times: the owner commits suicide and then shortly before the most important fight of his career, the club’s rising star Robert Yale, a muscular Doberman, disappears. Sonia Dunn, Joe Dunn’s daughter, hires private investigator Blakeside to use her last resort to track down the missing athlete. There are many ways to find the truth in the underworld between corruption and criminality: engage in multi-choice dialogues, prove your responsiveness in fast-paced events and your cleverness in puzzles. Your actions will influence the course of the case and the ending of the story. However, it’s still hard to predict how far the decision-making web will branch out.

Cat with many lives

A comic book reader? That’s right – the adventure is based on the comic book series of the same name, starring a black cat. And while some of the characters and setting are based on characters and locations from the comics (for example, the game features John’s occasional buddy, a gossip reporter and a weekly soap allergy), it’s an entirely new story. But the target group hasn’t changed: despite the cute looking animal figures, in Blacksad the player can expect adult entertainment in the style of noir crime novels. There’s also a jazzy soundtrack that, according to marketing, “could rival the soundtracks to the best Hollywood thrillers”. We’ll have to judge it as a whole first, but the music in the trailers actually sounds fast and appropriate. Although the moving images do a good job of capturing the atmosphere of New York City – leaves fluttering down streets that are lined with tall brick walls with countless fire escape ladders, sirens blaring in the background – the animation still feels stiff and clunky. What’s shown definitely doesn’t compare to the detailed and wonderfully lit comic scenes, but there’s still time before you, like John, start your investigations. Spanish developer Pendulo Studios could be back by September. Besides, Telltale’s adventures are popular not because of great graphics, but because of exciting stories, challenging decisions and interesting characters. surrounded by high brick walls with countless fire escape ladders, sirens sound in the background – but the animation still feels stiff and clunky. John himself will probably lead the game by talking to himself and commenting on events – just like in classic crime stories, which are often embellished by the cynical-sarcastic remarks of the protagonist. The finished game will be released with German speakers and lyrics, so far only English counterparts can be heard in the trailers, which do a good job.

For fans of the comic book, the story trailer also reveals plenty of allusions, for example whole scenes have been taken from the template, such as the shot in which you can see John’s office from a bird’s eye view. It’s unclear whether the comic book author wrote the entire story of the game himself or in collaboration with Pendulo Studios, but the adventure definitely has the blessing of the creator duo. The Spanish development team have been developing point-and-click adventures since 1994. Probably their most famous work is The Fugitive: A Roadside Adventure. However, none of their games appeared on Nintendo’s console before Blacksad – let’s hope Black Cat doesn’t bring Switch bad luck.

Adventure Autumn.

Blacksad Adventure certainly isn’t for everyone, if only because of its mature themes, including its depiction of blood and tobacco use. Pretty sure you don’t need to know the comics to start your investigation in New York. And perhaps you’re back in the mood for a dark adventure after the end of the Telltale era – in that respect, fans of the genre should get their money’s worth at the end of September this year.
