Three Things to Keep in Mind If You’re Moving

Are you planning to move this year? If so, you’re not alone — on average, 40 million Americans move to a new home each year.

There’s a lot to think about when you’re planning a move, especially if you’re selling your current home and buying another one. Even renters need to think about things like rental applications, deposits, and move-in dates.

Some details tend to fall through the cracks, though. It’s a good idea to make a list, so you don’t forget anything.

Make sure these three items are on the list.

1. Getting Mail Forwarded

Making sure that the post office knows your new address is essential to getting your mail in your new home. Fortunately, it’s easier than ever to update your address and get mail forwarded.

All you need to do is go online at USPS, hover over “Quick Tools” in the menu bar, and select the option for “Change My Address.” There is a $1 charge to change your address online.

You can also update your address in person at the post office for free. You’ll fill out a paper form and give it to the postal worker at the desk.

Keep in mind your mail forwarding will only last one year. During that year, you’ll need to make official address updates with your banks, friends and family, charities, and other groups that send you mail.

2. Update Your Car Registration

You probably know that you need to update your driver’s license at the DMV shortly after you move, but don’t forget about changing your car registration as well. There are usually rules about how quickly you need to make this update, and it can be as little as seven to 10 days.

A quick online search can let you know where your nearest county registration office is so that you can make the update right away.

3. Get New Auto Insurance

A new residence means new insurance, and the rates might change significantly. You probably already have your new homeowner’s or renter’s coverage set up for your property, but what about your car insurance?

Car insurance is often rated by zip code and other factors. That’s why it’s so important to shop around for insurance when you move to a new home. You’ll want to compare plans and get the best rates for the coverage you need.

The easiest way to get the best rates on insurance is to contact a company that can compare quotes from a variety of insurers. For example, Freeway Insurance reviews show that they are a great place to get affordable coverage, even if you don’t have an ideal driving record.

Be Ready For the Big Move!

Moving can be both exciting and overwhelming. Remembering the big details is easier than the smaller tasks, so take a moment to add these three important tasks to your list.

Once you settle into your new home, you’ll be glad that everything has been taken care of!
