What is rock music?
Rock music, also known as rock, is a style of music that emerged from various genres in the 1950s and 1960s. The actual rock music emerged from rock ‘n’ roll and various other directions such as blues. It came about after World War II when the country music of white Americans mixed with the rhythm and blues music of black Americans.
The result was rock and roll music. It was something completely new at that time and very different from the music that was usually played. That is why it became very popular, especially with young people. Rock ‘n’ roll musicians like Bill Haley, Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley made a name for themselves all over the world. Bill Haley’s song Rock Around the Clock from 1954 helped rock music’s international breakthrough.
If you are a big fan of rock music, then there are some amazing music bars that you cannot miss. The Rocksteady is one of them. It is an amazing music pub in Dalston that runs a lot of great music events on a regular basis.
What types of rock music are there?
After this new genre of music became successful, rock music split into several directions. A lot of new things were tried, each generation added something. This is how hard rock started in the 1970s with bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Queen. Other musicians made rock music that was a little quieter. This style was called soft rock. Successful soft rock artists at the time were for example David Bowie or Elton John. Around 1976 punk culture and punk music emerged in Great Britain.
Bands like The Clash or Ramones made punk rock popular in the United States and Europe. At the end of the 1970s, heavy metal, a particularly hard branch of rock, also emerged. The British band Black Sabbath had a particular influence on heavy metal. They didnât see themselves as a heavy metal band though. After young people had created their music and thus a specific means of expression with rock ‘n’ roll and beat, rock music is now a reflection of the attitudes and feelings of certain young people or youth cultures.
The newest of the indie rock bands include Foo Fighters, consisting of Dave Grohl, who was once a Nirvana band member, and Django Django. Although the Foo Fighters are essentially a household name at this point, there are still plenty of unknowns who are doing the indie festival scene, as one would expect the rock band to do. Essentially, rock music has come full circle at this point. It seems as though every genre has a very close cousin that was highly enjoyed a mere 15 or 20 years ago.
Punk rock has returned, the 80s power ballad is now being sung in Emo overtones, and women are fronting the vocals on metal songs. It’s simply the natural progression of rock music, to push the envelope and speak to a generation with powerful riffs and lyrics that make them feel something.
